(AP Photo) Mussolini, who had been overthrown, was rescued on September 12th, 1943 by German Fallschirmjäger from the Hotel Campo Imperatore, and is seen here in an airplane taking him to an airfield south of Rome.
After being freed from his prison in the Campo Imperatore hotel on September 12th, 1943, Benito Mussolini boarded a Fieseler Fi 156 Storch light aircraft that was waiting for him on the rocky highlands of Gran Sasso to take him away. The pilot at the controls, wearing an Fallschirmjäger helmet, is Hauptmann Heinrich Gerlach (Flugzeugführer Kommandierender General der XI.Fliegerkorps), while the giant man stooping behind Mussolini was SS-Hauptsturmführer der Reserve Dipl.Ing. Otto Skorzeny (Commander of Sonderverband z.b.V. Friedenthal) who insisted on accompanying Il Duce as they flew through the mountain valleys of Italy in the small and cramped plane!

A Sonderkraftfahrzeug 250 in Samrée, Belgium, German registration number 87 and, most importantly, its tactical symbol, which could belong to an artillery battalion of a mechanized unit. The vehicle displays a camouflage pattern consisting of several colors, including at least one light and one dark shade. The 150th PanzerBrigade was primarily engaged in the Malmedy area, where it lost the majority of its tanks while attempting to capture the town. Samrée is located near La Roche-en-Ardenne, quite far from Malmedy.

Leutnant Gerstenschlager commanded Ersatz Panther M10, B-10. Due to the Panther’s lack of a cupola, Gerstenschlager sustained a head injury when he exposed himself to orientate his surroundings. Subsequently, the Panther came under intense artillery bombardment from US forces. In a state of panic, the driver attempted to flee but accidentally drove the Panther into Café Du Rocher de Falize in La Falize. Overwhelmed by the situation, the crew hastily abandoned the Panther. This photo gives a clear view of the clever general similarity to the American vehicle which was achieved with cladding plates-note that even the spare track links are attached in ‘American style’.

The capture of superior American clothing during bitter winter weather inevitably led to its being worn by some German soldiers and in the aftermath of Unternehmen Greif, equally inevitably, any soldier who allowed himself to be captured so dressed invited summary execution. Two captured German members of Einheit Stielau (right) Rolf Meyer and (left) Günther Schulz, from the command of Otto Skorzeny. They had been caught while wearing American uniforms, a deliberate tactic intended to create confusion behind Allied lines. Found guilty of espionage under the terms of the Hague Convention of 1907, these two and another were executed by firing squad at Henri-Chapelle on December 30th,1944.

“They were captured on the 17th December 1944 and had ID cards with the following names ‘Charles W. Lawrence’, ‘Clarence van der Wert’ en ‘George Sensenbach’ but Pernass, Billing, and Schmidt were given a military trial at Henri Chapelle, sentenced to death, and executed by a firing squad. Captain J. Eiser (medical officer) of the 633th Medical Clearing Station pinned the white target patches on their chests, Schmidt’s glasses were taken off before he was shot and fanatic Billing shouted Long live our Führer Adolf Hitler, at the moment supreme.

The non-commissioned officers in the image accomplished the remarkable feat of destroying seventeen tanks in a single morning. Contrary to earlier identification, the officer in the distinct jump smock is SS-Obersturmführer "Macki" Markus, commanding 3./SS-Fallschirmjäger-Batallion 600.
